Peace Valley Charter School
Who we are:
Lunch Buddies is Peace Valley's supplemental breakfast/snack/lunch program. When a student forgets a lunch, has a crazy/late morning and arrives without having eaten breakfast, drops all their lunch in a mud puddle or simply just feels extra hungry one day, Lunch Buddies is here to help. We provide a few healthy staple items daily to ensure that all bellies are full so students can focus on learning. Each morning a box is filled with goodies and at lunchtime student helpers come around to each classroom with offerings. Students are also allowed to access the box for snack times and if they need breakfast, we will assist them with making oatmeal or grabbing a cereal bar. This program supports about 20-30 students daily. I like to say that every student will utilize Lunch Buddies at least once- we all have those days!
Ways to help:
Food Donations: Peace Valley has a limited budget and donations are always welcome, whether it be just once or weekly or anything in between. Below is a list of items that we use on a regular basis. Natural/healthy/organic/chemical-free/ALLERGY-free food is preferred, especially for produce, but we never turn away an offering. Large/bulk items from Costco are always most cost effective- if you already shop there for your family, please consider picking up and extra Kirkland Strawberry Jam. If you shop at Boise Co-op, Natural Grocers Or Trader Joes, please consider picking up a jar of Sunbutter. If you see a great deal on produce or know of a farmer with too much bounty, please consider grabbing an extra bag of apples, oranges, tangerines, celery or carrots.
Asking stores for donations: Have a local grocer or farmer contact? We'd love for you to hit them up on our behalf!
Picking up/transporting donations: We have a few requests in to stores and to Franz bakery for donations- depending on what we end up receiving back, it would be great to not have to waste fuel to go pick items up all over town so maybe a family that lives nearby could arrange a regular pick up for the school.
Lunch Preparation & packing: Love making sandwiches? Cutting produce? Then we have a job for you! Every morning we prepare roughly 20 sunbutter and jelly sandwiches. Carrots and celery are washed, cut and portioned into single serve (mostly done on Mondays to use for the week). Fresh fruit is washed daily. The lunch basket is then stocked up with these items as well as non perishables and condiments (raisins, ranch dressing, applesause, etc) and ready for lunch time. This can be done any time before lunch is served, although the goal is to have it available by morning snack/recess as many students know to come find the box if they need a snack. This job requires about an hour or less a day. If this sounds appealing to you, feel free to sign up for a day or a week or a particular day each week- whatever works for your schedule. If you haven't seen it yet, the Teacher's Lounge area has a new beautiful kitchenette area in which to prepare the food. Any interested parties can contact Megan for helper "training".
Brainstorming: We are currently looking into a more Earth-friendly reusable system for food servings. We currently divide food into plastic baggies, but we cannot in good conscience continue with this system now that we have a dishwasher to use. If you have any ideas about sanitary, yet cost effective ways to portion food in a washable, reusable way, please share! We are all ears!
If any of the above sounds appealing to you, please sign up below. If you have additional questions or suggestions about the program please email Megan at [email protected]
