Hypothermia 2020

SJN 2020 Hypothermia Prevention Week

Welcome to the SJN Hypothermia Prevention Week (HPW) Signup!

Fairfax County established a hypothermia prevention program 15 years ago to keep homeless people from freezing. Each week, a different faith community hosts homeless guests.  This is the twelth year St. John Neumann and its faith partners St. Thomas à Becket, St. Marks and Congregation Beth Emeth have hosted the hypothermia prevention shelter.  We will host up to 50 guests from Sunday evening, January 19, 2020 through Sunday morning, January 26, 2020.  Our guests will be facilitated by FACETS (Fairfax Area Christian Emergency and Transitional Services).

PLEASE NOTE: Our shelter has started as of Jan 19th!  At this point, if you're unable to to your volunteer slot, please send us an email at [email protected] to let us know so that we're able to look for a replacement.  Thanks so much!

The signup will open December 1, 2019.  Please browse the signup -- we have some new volunteer positions this year. Team leaders/team leader assistant positions are pre-arranged.

Scroll down to view all volunteer positions. Positions are arranged by date. Job descriptions and numbers of volunteers needed are listed for each job.  To sign up, click on "sign up" at your selected job and date.  This will take you to the registration window where you will provide your name and contact information. Use the drop down box to select your faith community. Two phone numbers are required in case we need to contact you quickly.  An email address required to set up your account.  We will use it to send you reminders, and you need it to request a swap with another volunteer.  The next time you sign in to SignUpGenius, the website will ask you for your account email and password -- you won't have to register again. Your account from past years will work this year as well.

Important information:

  • All volunteers must be 18 years or older.
  • Please sign up each volunteer individually, and please limit yourself to two slots of the same type (except van drivers  -- we always need more!) to enable others to volunteer.
  • Both a home AND work or cell phone number are required in case we need to contact you at the last minute.

Making changes: See note above.

Once you volunteer, you will receive one reminder from SignUpGenius two weeks before your volunteer slot, and another 2 days before your slot.  SignUpGenius will send you an email confirmation only if you request it when you sign up. We recommend requesting one.

Alternates will not be used unless a volunteer signed up for a particular slot is unable to work, or if we don't get the required number of volunteers. If a volunteer knows in advance that he/she cannot fulfill the obligation, he can request a swap with you.  In some cases, alternates will not know if they are needed until the last minute.  If you sign up as an alternate, you have committed yourself to that time.  Please avoid making other plans; if we call you at the last minute, it means someone is sick, and we really need to be able to count on you.

GENERAL VOLUNTEER TRAINING: There are two training date choices:

1.  9:00-10:15 am (there is a 20 minute tour of the facilities at 10:15 for first-time HPW volunteers) at SJN on Saturday, January 11.

2. 7:00-8:15 pm (there is a 20-minute tour at 8:15 for first-time HPW volunteers) at SJN on Monday, January 13.

Who needs to attend training?  Anyone who has not already attended HPW training at SJN. If you have already been trained at SJN, you do not need to come again unless you would like a refresher. It is recommended that overnight volunteers who have not been to training in two years come again, because there is new information you should be aware of.  Training is required for all new volunteers except where indicated on the signup.

VAN DRIVER TRAINING:   Saturday, January 11 at 10:30 am.  It will probably last about an hour, depending on how many people need to be trained. Bring your driver's license and a copy of your auto insurance.  FACETS carries insurance, but it requires that its drivers have their own as well. This training is for new van drivers only; if you have been trained previously, you do not need another training. Car drivers and van navigators do not need driver training, but navigators should attend the general training. If you have driven before, you will have to provide FACETS with current insurance information and a copy of your license.  You will be contacted about where to send this.

Thank you for volunteering for the SJN Hypothermia Prevention Shelter!  We appreciate your time and effort.
