TAAM - Turkish American Association of Minnesota
Turkish American Community Members!
Come join us at the 2019 Festival of Nations to help share our food and culture with fellow Minnesotans.
Volunteer at the Turkish Cafe or the Turkish cultural booth - and join our 4 day event for as long as you can (whether it’s hours or days!).
It’s a fun filled annual event where we meet many community members, make new friends and spend time with old ones. if you have visitors from Turkey bring them to spend the day (and talk Turkish all day long!). And, if you’re not Turkish but have ties to Turkey, or just want to meet bunch of fun loving Turkish Minnesotans, then sign up too!
The Turkish cafe income provides a great portion of our association’s income and allows us to host many events for our community and participate at cultural exchange activities throughout the year. We really need your support!!
The Turkish cultural booth exhibit does not generate income, but we get to educate Minnesotans with our rich culture. At the booth, we will highlight April 23 Children’s Day (National Sovereignty Day) as the celebration. Although it is based on a historical event (opening of the Grand National Assembly in 1920), it was dedicated to the children and has been celebrated as the Children’s Day since that time. In addition, it became an international event, celebrating all children across the globe. In this exhibit we will emphasize this celebration as an international children’s festival. Through four posters on the back wall, we will provide a historical overview of how the holiday started, and how it is celebrated today. The last poster will show children who attended the festival in Cappadocia. Cappadocia is an interesting region with stone formations (fairy chimneys) and underground cities. Tied to that, we will have a poster of that site for festival visitors to take pictures. There will also be activities for children such as learning about the meanings of kilim designs and coloring them.
Volunteers will interact with visitors to answer their questions, facilitate picture taking in front of the Cappadocia scene and also help children color the kilim designs.
Volunteers will get a free admission ticket to use at the Festival of Nation on the dates they volunteer. Call Teslime Davies (952-240-0897) or Aydin Durgunoglu (218-343-0619) on arrival to be greeted at the door with your ticket.
