East Cobb UMC will host our Family Promise Families the week of January 27, 2019.
Volunteer Opportunities- Volunteers are needed to help stage, set up bedrooms and guest areas, prepare and serve meals, spend the night as overnight hosts, take down, drive the van, and control the inventory (put away items after use). Additional Details of each duty are provided below.
Reminder: An initial Orientation/Training is required for all who will have direct contact with guests (meals, overnight, activities, etc.) The Family Promise day center/office offers training one evening every month from 7-9 p.m. For details please [email protected] or Camilla at 404-556-5465.

Sunday- Initial Setup
Includes unloading van and making beds. The children and youth will be available to help with these tasks. Move plastic storage bins, linens, and supplies out of closet to be ready for the Family Promise week. The location is in the Family Activities building (lower level). Tasks include : set up kitchen with coffee maker, toaster, kitchen supplies (cups, plates, utensils, napkins etc.); setup bathrooms with a 2 drawer rolling bin; confirm supplies are available. Make sure there is a set of sheets, comforter and towel available for each of the guests (plus extra set available). Make sure there is a brown woven trash can in each room.
EVENING HOSTS - 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm. Dinner provided. Greet the families when they arrive. Help the families set the tables, set up the buffet line, lead the blessing and have dinner with the families, assist the food preparers, store uneaten foods, and clean the kitchen afterwards. Stay until the Overnight Hosts arrive.
Note-Overnight hosts are encouraged to also participate as an Evening host when possible-please advise the Organizer if you will be performing both roles.
DINNER PREP-Prepare dinner for an avg. of 10-16 people (the exact count can be obtained the week before and usually includes evening hosts. Dinner to be served between 6:30-6:45. Please read the guidelines below:
Meal Tips- The guests typically enjoy:
- Simple but filling meals containing beef or chicken with components of the meal kept separate (for example a taco bar or pasta bar) which allows them to choose what they want and meet the needs of the children
- Salads with added extras like cheese, vegetables, croutons etc. or a base Soup with salad or sandwiches (such as grilled cheese)
- Favorite "take out" meals have included rotisserie chicken, fried chicken, chicken wings and pizza.
- Note- Casseroles can be unpredictable. Avoid pork unless it is on the side (like bacon bits for salad).
- Breakfast meals suggestions include fresh fruit along with eggs, pancakes, sausage (non-pork) or potatoes.
- ALLERGY AND DIETARY RESTRICTIONS- this will be advised the week before hosting begins.
Be sure and tell us in the "Notes" section of sign-up what you are planning to serve so we can repeat meals.
OVERNIGHT HOSTS - 8:00 pm - 7:00 am. Spend the evening in the common area game room Families are to retire at 9:00 to their respective rooms. Be available to answer questions should a need arise during the night. Bring linens for a twin bed, a small flashlight and alarm. The families leave early by 7AM Monday-Friday. On Saturday we ask they be gone by 10 AM. On Sunday morning, assist the families in transitioning with getting packed and moving to their next home.
TAKE-DOWN 7:30 - 9:30 AM Sunday. ([email protected] phone 678-522-1117) Assist the families by providing direction and assistance (if necessary) in take down tasks: strip, fold and place beds for packing in front room for loading onto the van first and getting the environment ready for the next location. Notify Family when breakfast is ready. Notify them of available Church/Sunday school times and let them know they are welcome to join. Be aware they may have a different church or work obligations.
Load the families' personal bins and cots into the van: beds first, followed by personal bins. Clean and square away the kitchen and refrigerator downstairs. Make sure all the rooms have been straightened, the room assignment signs have been thrown away and that they are ready for Sunday School.
LAUNDRY - Pick up and launder a bag of linens: sheets, towels, blankets. Laundry bags (tagged with your name) will be located downstairs inside the street facing door and may be picked up anytime after 8:00AM and before 12PM on Sunday . Please wash the linens with detergent and 1/2 cup bleach. Return the clean, folded laundry within 1 month.
