MLK 2019 Service Projects
Durham Tech's 2019 MLK Service Projects will consist of an off-campus painting project at Burton Elementary School and an on-campus Crafternoon for a Cause option in the Cafe. To make these projects happen we need the following items and people.
Off-Campus Painting Project at Burton Elementary School from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m.: We will clean and paint a space to serve as a Teachers' Lounge. We will also paint some outdoor benches in the play area for the children.
To sign-up as a volunteer for this project: https://www.volunteersignup.org/Q9YT7
There are limited spots available to volunteer for this project.
On-Campus Crafternoon for a Cause in the Cafe from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m.: We will have three service craft projects happening in the cafe. This event does NOT require registration. Just show up and volunteer! See project descriptions below:
- Crocheted Plastic Bag Mats: Turn plastic shopping bags into sleeping mats for homeless persons in Durham.
- Tie Blankets for Project Linus: Cut and tie fleece to create blankets that will be distributed by Project Linus to children in need at local hospitals and shelters.
- Port Pillows for Chemotherapy Patients: Sew a port pillow protector for cancer patients. A portacath is a small port placed beneath the skin so cancer patients can get their chemotherapy. It is often uncomfortable when a seatbelt rubs it. A port pillow attaches onto the seatbelt to protect the port from being irritated. All port pillows will be donated to a local Durham hospital. No sewing skills needed to participate.
