Ramadan Special Guests
You are invited to share a meal with a group of people observing the Ramadan fast!
It is year 1440 of the Islamic calendar.
Every year during the Islamic month of Ramadan, families and friends gather around an evening meal (called "Iftar") to break the fast. You are invited you to join us.
In 2018, some 169 Kingstonians shared this special moment with us.
Ready to sign-up? Scroll all the way down to sign up straight away. Need more information? Please read the Ramadan Trivia below.
PS: Please expect an email confirmation at the end of the sign up process. If you get none, your registration did not go through.
We look forward to welcoming you soon at our table!!!
Ramadan is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar. It is a period of observance, fasting, charity-giving and self-discipline, somehow comparable to Lent in the Christian faith.
Kingston Muslim volunteers have instituted a tradition of offering the Iftar meal to those observing the fast while being away from home. In 2018, 1,794 meals were served on the University campus.
When is it taking place?
The program runs every day of the week from May 6 to June 5, 2019. It starts around 8:30 PM.
Where do I sign-up?
Please book a spot in the Online calendar below. It takes no more than a few minutes. As soon as you do so, you will receive an automatic confirmation.
Where is it taking place?
After more than 40 years of Iftars being held at the John Deutsch University Centre (JDUC), we are moving to the QUIC's new home in Mitchell Hall. Mitchell Hall is located near the corner of Union and Division Streets in the heart of campus at the former location of the Physical Education Centre (PEC) and it is steps away from our former location. It is adjacent to the John Deutsch University Centre, the Athletics and Recreation Complex, and the School of Kinesiology and Health Studies. Free parking is available on Union street.
What should I expect?
We ask our guests to dress up modestly.
The occasion is very casual: There are neither podiums nor speeches, and seating is not assigned. Use this opportunity to get to know others while enjoying a delicious meal. Feel free to ask questions!
Sunset time varies by a few minutes every day. We ask you to arrive 15 minutes after official sunset time. Don't panic if you arrive early and the place is totally deserted. We will be back after a group prayer recited in a separate room upstairs.
One of the volunteers will guide you to a table. Once the food arrives, all present line-up to be served by kitchen staff. Ladies usually go first.
Why am I being invited?
This initiative has spurred from the realization that more bridges need to be built between religious traditions and cultures. Understanding the "other" is something that our world is in dire need of these days. What better occasion than seating around a table and sharing food. And yes, bring a friend/partner! Just remember to book a spot for the other person as well.
