EYEJ: Empowering Youth, Exploring Justice (www.eyej.org) was created in 2013 with Plymouth Church members, after recognizing an immediate need for an increase in values and self-confidence in African-American males and the African American community. Our mission is to empower and amplify the voices of teens and pre-teens by bridging them with diverse individuals to engage in interactive discussions centered around social justice.
ABOUT DISCUSSION SERIES:
A 1-hour discussion series in schools across Northeast Ohio predominately in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District for 6-12th graders. A specific design, where Volunteer Speakers partner together to discuss with small groups of students about topics relating to social justice such as Exploring Power & Privilege, Education, Health, Money, Community Relationships, Race & Justice and more. EYEJ’s Curriculum team provides speakers with a “speaker doc” that serves as a guide of the dedicated topic and discussion. Discussions are a favorite with both students and speakers. It provides an open and safe environment to have an honest discussion, develop critical thinking skills and foster new ideas for change. Focused on social/emotional learning. New in the 2017-2018, with the partnership of the Cleveland Institute of Art, EYEJ will hold a reflection event in May, where students will create an art piece that represents what they learned for the year in our Discussion Series. At the reflection event, where family, teachers and the community will gather. Students will present what they learned for the year, what suggestion they have the for positive change and their art piece. EYEJ will award one student in each school, the June Antoine Social Justice Warrior Award.
Volunteer: EYEJ needs you!
BE A VOLUNTEER SPEAKER IN OUR DISCUSSION SERIES:
What makes EYEJ unique is that we aim to expose the students to individuals of all professions, ethnicities, and socio-economic standings to create positive relationships that have a lasting impact. A community is only as strong as its members who actively work to uplift its residents. For just one hour out of your week, you could uplift spirits and have an amazing and engaging conversation with some amazing kids from the neighborhood. There is a pre-assigned topics and curriculum created by experts in the industry but we love creativity, encourage innovation and discussion surrounding the assigned topic for that specific discussion series. Furthermore you will have a partner and Coordinator to support you facilitate the Discussion Series.
BE A COORDINATOR IN OUR DISCUSSION SERIES:
Coordinators help the discussion series flow by distributing and collecting all paperwork that needs to be completed by the students, supports the speakers, helps with the activities, and helps students that may need additional assistance during the discussion series. EYEJ places one Volunteer Coordinator per classroom/group, but there are times when a Coordinator may have multiple classrooms at a time to assist and support the speakers with.
