ABOUT DISCUSSION SERIES:
A 1 Hour, monthly discussion series for 6th - 12th graders in schools predominately in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District. Our non-lecture style allows youth to engage in authentic and safe discussions on rotating issues like conflict resolution, toxic stress, violence in the community, money management, technology, police and youth relationships, entrepreneurship, and exploring power and privilege. Three volunteers per class partner together in small groups to discuss these issues with small groups of students (by grade/gender) using a pre-written speaker guide. EYEJ encourages Volunteers to incorporate their own stories, experiences, and expertise to create an open, genuine, and direct dialogue.
VOLUNTEER: EYEJ NEEDS YOU!
1 Hour Training Session is required for all roles.
BE A SPEAKER IN THE DISCUSSION SERIES:
What makes EYEJ unique is that we aim to expose the students to individuals of all professions, ethnicities, and socio-economic standings to create positive relationships that have a lasting impact. A community is only as strong as its members who actively work to uplift its residents. It only takes 2 hours to have an incredible, perspective-shifting discussion with Cleveland's youth and provide them with the platform to speak up on these issues. We have a topic curriculum created by experts in the industry, but we love your creativity and encourage innovation and discussion surrounding the assigned topic for that specific discussion series. If you don't complete the speaker guide - don't worry! As long as the young people are engaged in discussion, you aer doing great! Furthermore you will have a Facilitator partner and Coordinator to support you in the Discussion Series. This is a chance to share your expertise, knowledge, and story regarding the topic.
BE A FACILITATOR IN THE DISCUSSION SERIES:
Facilitators are committed to understanding the EYEJ design of the Discussion Series and speaker guide. They are also committed to going to the same group/school (once a month) throughout the year. They serve as a partner to the Discussion Series speaker. You must be comfortable speaking and guiding the discussion. This role requires approval.
BE A COORDINATOR IN THE DISCUSSION SERIES:
Coordinators help the Discussion Series process by handling paperwork including sign in sheets, surveys, and activity materials, and take photos and videos of the event. They will also support the discussion by monitoring the time for the Facilitator and Speaker, distributing extra supplies, and helping any students who may require assistance. Coordinators may participate in the discussion or activities, but are not required to be at the front and center of the discussion. Coordinators will take notes of important statements made during the event - this means the big moments! We need Coordinators who are observant and discerning.
