Sandmen stay inside the perimeter while the effigy burns, facing OUT the entire time. They're there to provide a last line of safety for participants watching the effigy.
The job starts after fire performers finish, as FAST (Fire And Safety Team) takes the field (you'll typically be in position before that, though).
NOTE: This is a hot, but incredibly important, job.
No, really, it is very hot. You will sweat (and we'll bring you water). You'll want to start hydrating before the shift, too. And you should wear natural fibers (like a plain cotton shirt and denim jeans) and avoid synthetic materials which might melt to your skin, such as vinyl graphic t-shirts.
