Holiday Giving Volunteers 2016-2018
Ladies and Gentlemen,
It's that time of year again...when the PB&J Fund needs your help! For the 10th year in a row, please join us in packing bags with healthy food for Charlottesville families!
The Holiday Giving program is an effort the PB&J Fund started in Charlottesville in response to the prevalence of food insecurity that takes place when children reliant on the Free and Reduced Lunch Program are at home for extended breaks like they are each December. According to the 2014 Hunger Study, the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank reports that 1 in 6 children in our area struggle with hunger, and 29% of their clients are children under the age of 18. Each year, we gather over 100 community volunteers to prepare materials and pack bags filled with kid-friendly, nutritious meals and snacks. This year, we will be packing 900 bags!
- Friday, December 6th AND Saturday, December 7th, 2019

FRIDAY NIGHT PREPARATIONS, 6-9 PM (adults and teens): Unload the food trucks, sort the products into categories, and count the units of each product. This helps us to replace any missing or damaged items before Saturday morning. YOUR help on Friday evening makes for smooth bag packing the next day. The pallets will already be off of the trucks to speed up our unloading this year. On Friday night, we will also be packing a small number of partial bags for Madison House to hand out through their Holiday Sharing program. A smaller group of us will follow the truck over to Madison House to unload these bags. Thank you!!
SATURDAY MORNING (3 Shifts):
This is a family-friendly event. Look for the shift below that best fits your family.
SATURDAY MORNING PACKING, 9-10:30AM (for families with 12 and under): Children 12 and under can help an adult pack a bag or hand out items to bag packers at a station. We know that many of our young helpers tire out after an hour, so we’ve created this shorter shift just for families with young children. Families participating in this shift are free to leave early if their packing helpers run out of steam.
SATURDAY MORNING PACKING, 9 AM - 12 PM (for adults and teens): Watch the stacks of groceries decrease as we carefully pack about 900 bags of shelf-stable, nutritious food for families in our community.
SATURDAY MORNING PACKING & DELIVERY, 9 AM - 1 PM (for adults and teens): See the final destination of all those bags!! This shift lets you pack for a while and then follow the delivery trucks to area schools to unload the bags. You will be greeted by a school contact and shown where to place the bags. This shift takes you from the bag packing to seeing that nutritious food sent out into our community. Early delivery teams will return to PB&J for a second delivery run or to help with final cleanup. We leave the Boys and Girls Club gym like we were never even there.
A BIG THANK YOU to all of our returning volunteers and a WARM WELCOME to those joining us for the first time this year! We hope that Holiday Giving is an annual tradition you will want to share with friends and family.
