CAST: Seeking a creative, passionate, and explosive ensemble of actors and actresses to portray a large range of characters. These artists should be comfortable with theatrical movement, music, and dance. All roles are available. Casting actors ages 16 and up.
SYNOPSIS: LIPSTICK TRACES is a physically ecstatic and intellectually nervy tour of the 20th century! A Narrator with a Ph.D. joins Sex Pistols’ manager and self-proclaimed creator of punk, Malcolm McLaren to recount an alternative history of the movements in culture that raised no monuments… movements that barely left a trace. A wild chronicle of the nihilist impulse throughout history, including medieval heretics, the Dadaists, the Situationists, and of course, the Sex Pistols, Johnny Rotten, and punk rock!
WHAT TO PREPARE: Actors will be asked to read sides from the show, which will be sent via e-mail at least one week before the audition. Please bring a headshot and resume. Masks will be worn at all time except during actual auditions.
NARRATOR: (Female Presenting) A Narrator with a Ph.D. in it. A sort of punk rock librarian with major anxiety who passionately loves her subject. The Narrator guides us on our journey through time according to her own organization, inserting her own history into the history of the 20th century.
MALCOLM MCLAREN: (Male Presenting) The Sex Pistols’ manager, mastermind, and self-proclaimed creator of punk rock. Brilliant, cocky, and mischievous. Presenting a slightly different viewpoint on history than our Narrator, Malcolm inserts himself as an alternate opinion concerning the major moments in history that created punk rock.
RICHARD HUELSENBECK: (Male Presenting) A German writer, poet, and founder of the Dadaists. Shortly after the eve of World War I he moved to Switzerland where he fell in with the Cabaret Voltaire. “To make literature with a gun in my hand had for a time been my dream.”
GUY DEBORD: (Male Presenting) A French Marxist theorist, philosopher, filmmaker, member of the Letterist International, founder of a Letterist faction, and founding member of the Situationist International.
HERETIC: (Male Presenting) This actor portrays a range of heretics over time, from John of Leydon in 1534 to Michel Mourre in 1950, as well as other characters.
JOHNNY ROTTEN: (Male Presenting) The lead singer of the Sex Pistols. The self-proclaimed “antichrist” who vows that he wants to “destroy the passerby.” Through his outspoken personality, rebellious image, and scandalous behavior he changed the face of pop music for all time.
TRISTAN TZARA: (Male Presenting) A Romanian and French avant-garde poet, essayist and performance artist. Also active as a journalist, playwright, literary and art critic, composer and film director, he was known best for being one of the founders and central figures of the anti-establishment Dada movement. Tzara's shows at the Cabaret Voltaire, as well as his poetry and art manifestos, became a main feature of early Dadaism. His work represented Dada's nihilistic side, in contrast with the more moderate approach favored by Hugo Ball.
HUGO BALL: (Male Presenting) A German author, poet, and essentially the founder of the Dada movement in European art in Zürich in 1916. Among other accomplishments, he was a pioneer in the development of sound poetry.
STEVE JONES: (Male Presenting) is an English rock guitarist, singer, actor and radio DJ, best known as a guitarist with the Sex Pistols.
COMPENSATION: All actors will receive a stipend.
