July 31st, 2021 Welcoming

July 31st, 2021 Welcoming - Santa Rosa

On Saturday, July 31st, we will be fully furnishing and equipping the apartments of one individual and three formerly homeless families in Sonoma County. The families were referred to us by Catholic Charities Sonoma County.

Donations can be dropped off at St. Seraphim of Sarov Cathedral in Santa Rosa, 90 Mountain View Ave. Santa Rosa on Saturday morning, July 31st, between 9:30 and 11:00. Large furniture items will be picked up that morning by our wonderful moving partners, Robb & Messer Moving and Storage. We only accept items listed below.

We were able to give each family a 'starter kit', including new beds, new sheets and towels, a couple of floor lamps (there is no overhead lighting in the apartments) and some basic kitchen items - all donated by previous donors - to keep them going until we are able to fully furnish and equip their homes.

Please see the list below and donate what you can to help the formerly homeless families.

All four of the individuals/families we’ll be helping on July 31st were referred by Catholic Charities Sonoma.

Gary lives in Home #1; he’s in his sixties. His father was physically very abusive, once breaking every bone in his face when he was nine years old. He ran away from home when he was 12. As an adult, Gary worked for the same construction company for 30 years. He was great at it and loved every minute of it until he seriously hurt his shoulders. The resulting surgeries were botched, rendering him disabled. He’s been living in his truck for the last nine years. He has tried for the housing lottery about 25 times until finally scoring his apartment. Even with an essentially empty place, he told us he is “so happy now” to finally have a real roof over his head.

Elsa and her children live in Home #2. Elsa was a victim of domestic violence for five years and eventually fled her home with her three young children. She initially stayed with her mother but had to leave because the apartment had a limit on the number of inhabitants. She stayed in a shelter until very recently when Catholic Charities helped her to find housing. She and her children (aged 6,3 and 2) are thrilled to finally have their own place. Elsa works full time as a cashier at a gas station. She will go back to school to finish her high school diploma in the fall and then get an AA degree that will allow her to pursue her dream of being a physician’s assistant. She said wants to follow that career so she can help people in a similar way as she has been helped. She wants to “be there for people,” she said.

Maria and her two pre-teen daughters live in Home #3. Maria endured 14 years of escalating domestic violence. She required medical attention a number of times and reported her husband to the police, but no action was taken. When her husband tried to abuse her daughters, she immediately fled. Her daughters are bright and talented. They used to take free clarinet, violin and piano lessons when they lived in another state but are not able to continue here in Sonoma County, due to the expense. They both are also soccer stars, a sport they hope to be able to pursue here. Maria is a caregiver at a senior facility. She has won rave reviews from the family members of seniors she helps and from the company she works for due to her caring personality and upbeat spirit. She told us that she is “so grateful” for all the help she has received so far and for having a safe place for her daughters to live. She can’t believe that her whole apartment is about to be fully furnished and outfitted by total strangers.

Michelle and her three children live in Home #4. She has twins, a boy and girl, who are 12 and a 21-year-old son who is on the spectrum. Michelle, too, is a survivor of domestic violence. Her husband was physically abusive to her in front of the children, so she knew she had to leave. Without his income, she was unable to afford a place to live. She put all their belongings in storage and with her children bounced to and from friends’ homes for a while. It was hard for the children to go to a consistent school under this scenario, so Michelle made the difficult decision to have them live with a friend out of state for a while. Thanks to Catholic Charities, she was finally able to find an apartment where she and her children have just settled. Michelle was able to work as a caregiver for much of the last few years until the pandemic. She now works for a government agency that provides in home support services and is beginning to rebuild a client base and the additional income that comes with it. She is so very grateful to be able to live with her children again and to be able to make a fresh start.
