The Cleveland Orchestra Youth Chorus (COYC) was founded in 1991 to raise awareness of choral music-making in the schools of northeastern Ohio, and to encourage more students to continue their choral activities through college and into adulthood. The Youth Chorus comprises approximately 100 members in grades 9 to 12 and representing over 40 schools and communities. COYC presents an average of five concerts each season and regularly collaborates with other outstanding ensembles such as The Cleveland Orchestra, the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra, and the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus. In addition to performances at Severance Hall, their activities include concerts and community engagement programs throughout the greater Cleveland area, as well as workshops and masterclass opportunities with highly regarded choral directors and clinicians.

Members of the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Chorus are selected through competetive audition. Auditions are by appointment only and are held each spring, with a final audition date scheduled in early fall. Additional time slots may be added to each date based as needed.
Auditions on June 2 will take place at First Baptist Church of Greater Cleveland, located in Shaker Heights. Directions for navigating the building will be sent as the auition date draws closer.
The COYC is open to students entering grades 9 through 12 in the fall of 2019, as well as 8th grade boys with changed voices. Prospective members must be able to commit to the full Youth Chorus season, including rehearsal each Sunday from September through April.
Younger students may be interested in the Cleveland Orchestra Children's Choruses, our treble ensembles for singers in grades 5-9.
What to Expect
Auditionees are asked to prepare one piece from the OMEA Solo & Ensemble approved list OR a classical solo piece, for which an accompanist is provided. Pop or Broadway tunes are not acceptable. Students will also be asked to demonstrate their vocal range and sight reading abilities. Auditions take approximately 10 minutes, and an accompanist is provided.
Rehearsal & Schedule
Youth Chorus rehearses on Sunday afternoons throughout the school year, typically at Fairmount Temple in Beachwood. Rehearsals run from 1:45 to 4:30, with a short break given halfway through. Additional rehearsals are required during concert weeks and are scheduled as far in advance as possible, typically at the beginning of the season.
