Join Pack 55 for a fun, socially distanced, outdoor Science-Technology-Engineering-Math (STEM) themed Field Day. The Houston Museum of Science will provide two stations (Sunshine and Shadows, Water Cycle), with presentations held every 30 minutes. Participants will be able to do both stations. Use the link below to sign up for a one-hour time slot (30 minutes at each station). You will be assigned the order of your stations upon arrival. Please sign up all participants (adults, scouts, siblings) to ensure balanced group sizes.
Sunshine and Shadows
Discover how to tell time by the sun, how bright sunlight really is, and how to concentrate solar energy. Watch solar cookers, panels, and ovens at work. Then, observe the sun with a projection solar telescope and filters. Measure the height of the sun to understand why we have seasons, and discover how far Earth and the other planets are from the sun as you make a solar system scale model.
Water is always on the move—find out how it transforms while exploring each fascinating stage of the water cycle! From oceans to bayous, uncover the secrets of where water comes from and where it is going, as well as why it’s so important to keep our water clean. Students will explore evaporation and condensation through interactive demonstrations, and see examples of precipitation, runoff, and groundwater using watershed models. Through the lens of Hurricane Harvey, students will learn about the impact of hurricanes on our watershed and how our city is preparing for the future.
All participants will wear nose/mouth covering masks and conduct a health screening upon arrival. Family units will participate in the stations together, maintaining at least 6’ from other family groups. Restroom facilities are only available in case of an emergency, and only before noon. Restroom facilities will not be available after noon, due to new facilities closure schedule. Bring your own water. Please arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled program time to conduct the pre-event health screening. To speed the process, print and bring your signed self-check health forms. The event will be rescheduled in case of inclement weather. Bring a camp chair or blanket for your family's comfort. Baseball season is in full swing, so please signup for a time slot that works for your family. Time slots are available throughout the day. If game scheduels change, please go back into the signup and modify your time slot to another with availability.
