Sunday Open House Volunteers
Please review the available slots below and click on the button to sign up. Thank you!
Greetings from the beautiful P & E Office at BSC. I hope everyone is doing well.
I’m writing to invite you, a small group of teachers, to sign up for our Sunday Community Practice and to inform you of our new format tweaks.
The new Sunday Community Practice initiative (aka Shambhala Church) is going quite well. A couple of weeks ago we had 40-50 people in the main shrine room at 11am. People seem to be really enjoying our Community Lunch at noon following practice. We are combining meditation, food, and conversation, building community, offering helpful dharma talks, and welcoming new and seasoned practitioners into the center. It has been a nice success.
This is the update to our existing format:
- We begin, as always, with opening chants followed by sitting and walking meditation from 9am-11am.
- Open House will be from 10am-11am in the Community Room which will include the Open House teacher offering meditation instruction.
- At 11am, the Open House teacher and greeter lead the Open House guests to the shrine room.
- From 11am-1130, we have another sitting and walking period.
- At 1130am, the teacher gives a 15 minute dharma talk and facilitates a discussion for the remaining 15 minutes.
- At noon, everyone is invited to the Community Lunch in the Community Room.
The biggest change is that the Teacher (you) is now also leading Open House in addition to the 11am-noon session. Sitting and walking meditation instruction is once again part of the Open House portion of the morning.
So during the 10am-11am Open House, the teacher and host will welcome and introduce our guests to the Shambhala center and to our offerings, answer questions, and facilitate a discussion with support from the greeter, who will be responsible for setting up tea and a snack and offering their perspectives during the discussion. Please find a way to include the greeter/host in the conversation. It will often be a Shambhala Guide and this could be a mentoring opportunity.
At around 1030am, you could segue into meditation instruction, leaving time for questions and answers. Please also give walking meditation instruction during this time, so people know what’s up once they are upstairs in the shrine room.
Just having given the newcomers meditation instruction, we will have a sitting and walking period once you relieve the morning umdze and take the seat at 11am. (This also gives people the opportunity for uninterrupted sitting and walking meditation from 9am-1130am.)
Then, again, your talk (which I would just do from the umdze seat, but could also be from a teacher’s chair if you prefer) could begin at 1130, with a discussion beginning at 1145. Tracy Suchocki or me (Travis May) will be there to assist with any setup that is needed, e.g., the microphone and chair.
We would very much enjoy and appreciate your participation in this effort! I would also warmly encourage you to come and be a part of the community when you’re not teaching too as often as you can.
Here is the signup sheet. Please check back from time to time (you could bookmark the website in your browser for easier access) and fill in the gaps. OH! Also, if you have any difficulties signing up, please just email me ([email protected]) and tell me what date you’d like to sign up for and I would be more than happy to sign you up: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0c49acae2ea5fd0-dharma
Thank you for all that you do. I hope you will be able to support this special offering and help make it a welcoming, helpful, and rewarding experience for yourself and our guests. We’d also like to create a culture of gentle and supportive feedback as well.
Yours in the Vision of the Great Eastern Sun,
Director of Practice & Education
