Potential New Crew Members,
PLEASE REVIEW THE SWIM TEST REQUIREMENTS BELOW.
Each first-year participant in crew (novices) must pass the swimming requirement set forth by the Virginia Area Scholastic Rowing Association (VASRA). You must pass the test to participate in the Spring Season. Once the test has been passed, it does not have to be retaken in subsequent years. If you passed the swim test to participate in multiple Open Row Days the test does not need to be re-taken to participate in the Spring Season. For safety reasons, failure to meet this requirement will prevent participation in crew (if you know your athlete cannot swim at all, they should probably not go out on the water).
Please wear SWIM SUIT. The test is conducted in two parts: (1) Swimming 100 meters using any stroke the swimmer prefers with no time limit. (2) Treading water for two minutes.
The swim lane at the rec center is 25 meters, so 100 meters is swimming the length of the pool 4 times (back and forth 2 times). As mentioned above, there is no time limit. You do not have to swim fast, or even very well, so long as you can demonstrate that you can cover the distance and stay above water.
The intent of the test is to ensure Crew participants are able to maintain themselves in the water in the event they fall out of the boat for any reason. Rowers do not wear life jackets while rowing and must be able to sustain themselves until help arrives. While on the water, either at practice or at regattas, coaches or judges are in motorized launches with life jackets for each rower and other associated safety equipment.
