Women of Vision in Action January 2022

"It is of the Lord's mercies that we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not.  They are new every morning: Great is Thy faithfulness."  Lamentations 3: 22-23

From the World Vision web site: "Going to the ends. Where no one else goes. Because Jesus is alive in the hardest places to be a child."

Please join Women of Vision in Action in January for our first service event of the New Year, when we have a unique opportunity to come alongside children who are visiting a parent in one of those "hardest places": prison.  The initiative, Know Me Now (KnowMeNow.org), commits to transforming the visitation experience into something warm, inviting and full of positive memories by providing Connect Kits to each child; they will open these kits while with their parent.  Here is a great explanation from Know Me Now:

"While the child visits their parent in prison, they select a box of items (that are age appropriate) to foster connection with their mom or dad.  Instead of walking into an intimidating institution to visit with nothing of their own, this box will provide some extra excitement and practical activities for the child and parent to do together.  And, they will take the box with them after the visit as a reminder of the special time they shared with their parent."

Some of the essential items needed for the Connect Kits are a coloring book, crayons or markers, a small game or a book, a toy, and a healthy snack.  Some extras might be socks, water bottles, crafts, stickers, dolls, legos, treats to share, or a puzzle.  There are different age groups to choose from ranging from 1 to 17, boy or girl.  You will need to place all of the items into a sturdy photo storage or memory box.  More detailed instructions will be sent to those of you who sign up with us.  You may do more than one kit, if you would like.

As part of The Contigent (thecontigent.org), the Know Me Now initiative focuses on serving families impacted by incarceration by building support systems for everyone involved. They provide tangible on-ramps for the community to step in the gap to ensure healthy reunification between families.  In addition to the Connect Kits, they provide New Beginnings Bags to give to moms and dads leaving prison, and they offer a letter writing program so that adults in custody and the corrections staff can receive letters of encouragement.  Prison is a very isolating experience and communication with the world outside can bring much needed hope.

The In Action team will meet you to pick up your boxes at 3 different locations on Thursday morning, January 13th, and we hope to have coffee with you, as well! We will deliver the Connect Kits to the Know Me Now office the same day.

We look forward to putting these kits together as they will likely transform a scary and intimidating experience into something special for both the parent and the child.  We hope you'll say "yes"!!
