World Vision and Women of Vision know that life can be very hard for children and families in our world as well as in our own local communities. This is why Women of Vision in Action teams are serving locally, and why we are once again serving at The Children's Book Bank in Portland, so that we, with God's help, can make a difference in the lives of others.
The Children's Book Bank and Portland Public Schools believe every child can learn to read. But, to learn to read, children need to be surrounded by books at home so that reading becomes a regular part of their lives! For children in poverty, one of the biggest obstacles to literacy development (which begins at birth) is the scarcity of books in the home. Did you know? A child from a low-income family enters first grade with an average of only 25 hours of one-to-one picture book reading, compared with 1,000 to 1,700 hours for a child from a typical middle-class home!
We have an opportunity to help! On Wednesday, October 13th from 11:00 - 1:00 we will head over to the Book Bank location at 1915 NE 7th Ave, Portland, Oregon. Please arrive at 10:45 to check in, as training for the project starts at 11:00. A donation of one or more books for children in the pre-school to middle school age range would be greatly appreciated! The books can be new or used. Multicultural books are a special need. Amazon is a good source if you would like to purchase a book(s).
Our task that day will be to mend, clean, and organize gently-used books. Book "mending" involves erasing scribbles, taping tears, removing stickers, etc. The books will then be bundled up and delivered to every Head Start child in Multnomah County, local pre-school programs, and underserved elementary and K-8 schools. Please join us for this fun event and an optional lunch afterwards (no host) at a nearby location!
