Bethlehem Lutheran Church
Welcome to the Bethlehem Lutheran Church Interfaith Shelter Volunteer Sign Up page!
This is where you can volunteer for specific needs of the homeless shelter that our church sponsors. We partner with the Interfaith Shelter Network which is a collaborative effort by local congregations, human services agencies and government entities to provide shelter, services, and resources to homeless San Diegans throughout the region.
IF YOU ARE UNFAMILIAR WITH THIS MINISTRY PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING DESCRIPTIONS CAREFULLY.
HOW IT WORKS AT BETHLEHEM:
Church volunteers set up temporary housing and dining facilities in the Multi Use Room and Family Center. We host up to 12 people. Our guests arrive daily at 5:30 pm. They eat dinner in the Family Center at 6:30 pm and then retire to the Multi Use Room for the night. Guests leave early in the morning and are not allowed to stay in the shelter during the day. Volunteers are also needed to deliver food for lunch and breakfast but guests prepare breakfast and lunch themselves.
Bethlehem hosts the shelter for 2 weeks starting March 31-April 14, 2019, but Seaside Community Church will be providing all of the volunteers and food for the first week (March 31 - April 7), except for transportation this year.
Overnight Host - The Overnight Host arrives at 6:00 PM and stays the night, leaving at 6:30 the next morning. They eat dinner with the guests and make sure questions and problems are answered. They are a secure presence for our shelter guests. A coordinator is always available to intervene or answer any questions but there are rarely any problems.
Transportation to BLC - Our guests are staying at a neighboring church up until Sunday, March 31, when BLC hosts the shelter. Volunteers are needed to transport the guests and their belongings to Bethlehem. Large vehicles are especially helpful.
Dinner Provider - This is an opportunity for your family to provide and share a meal with our guests. Dinner providers bring food for all of the guests and themselves. They serve in the Family Center and have full use of the kitchen. Works best to bring most food prepared ahead of time ready to warm and serve. The Dinner Providers stay and dine with the guests and then clean up afterwards. Please check with Diane to see about current food needs.
Breakfast Delivery - Note the description; "Delivery". Guests leave early in the morning so they serve themselves breakfast. Breakfast Deliverers bring easy to prepare food on the evening before it is to be eaten. They deliver to the Multi Use Room and place cold foods in the refrigerator and other items on the counter. Cereal, milk, bagels, juice and fruit are all good options. Please check with Diane to check with current food needs.
Lunch Delivery - This is also a delivery item. Guests assemble their own sack lunches that they take with them when they leave the shelter for the day. Lunch Deliverers bring lunch food items on the evening before it is to be eaten. They deliver to the Multi Use Room and place cold food items in the refrigerator and other items on the counter. Lunch meat, sandwich bread, individually wrapped crackers and cookies, bottled water, juice boxes and fruit are good items to deliver. It's a good idea to check with Diane to check with current food needs.
Set Up - A few hands is all we need to build the sleeping partitions and make the quarters suitable. We will be setting up a couple nights before and most of Saturday morning.
Take Down - A hand full of people to take down the partitions and make the room suitable for the regular church activities that take back the space.
Laundry Night - We need an adult volunteer to drive some guests and their laundry to and from a laundromat nearby.
