As many of you know, Tower Hill First Presbyterian Church has been instrumental over the past 30 years to help the Eva May Russell School and orphanage in Monte Plata, Dominican Republic. The school was started in a chicken coup but has grown to several cinder block two story tall buildings for approximately 250 kindergarten through 9th graders. The children are too poor to attend the local public school and not only receive full-day education, something that has only happened in the past 8 years, but also are fed breakfast and lunch. Some live in the associated orphanage (refered to as Casa). Currently, though, the students are attending half-day to enable social distancing.
We are continuing to also help a newer school, Miancerg, located in a barrio in the capitol, Santo Domingo. These children always only attend school half day so the small school can get more children off the street to educate and feed. There is a group of approximately 100 children that come in the morning and then others that come in the afternoon.
This year we will again collect items for children for Christmas using Sign Up Genius. It worked very well last year and allowed each child to receive more equal items, in addition to being cheaper and easier for many of you all by buying on-line and in bulk.
Thanks to this year's Vacation Bible School, some of the fun items have been purchased and placed in new colorful drawstring bags for the children. Items included were stuffed animals, matchbox cars and games.
Please review the available slots below and click on the button to sign up. The number of items needed is written in parenthesis.
If you plan to shop on-line and would like to ship items directly to my home, that is fine. Many did this last year. My address is: 31 Seagull Lane, Lincroft, NJ 07738.
We will also have a collection day in which items can be dropped off at church. That date is Sunday, October 24 in Webster Hall. We will be packing items in barrels on Monday so will need all items by the 24th.
Thank you very much for all your prayers and support for the children in the DR. They were able to start in-person school this week. Please pray this is able to continue.
