FCC PADS MLK Day
Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr
Silence is not an option, when it comes to engagaing with our homeless community members. Join us on MLK Day, as we draw upon the spirit of Dr. King and embrace our homeless community members.
Do you have a gift, talent, occupation or passion that can positively impact someone's life? Are you able to organize or coordiante a meal? Our event is structured for you to bring this aspect to the homeless men in our community. We can't close the chasm of poverty in one day but we can fill in some cracks of the heart and let the men feel their existence matters to us.
On Sunday nights, Flossmoor Community Church hosts a men's PADS homeless shelter. The next morning the men filter into our community and many utilize the libraries, to stay warm & safe. The libraries are closed on MLK Day, so we keep our shelter open all day...and celebrate our guests!
The event looks like this...
Sunday Night - 5pm-8pm - Men's clothing donations dropped off and free store set up
6:00 - Early Riser Lounge = Room upstairs with coffee, donuts & newspapers to greet our men who will not be sleeping in, while not disturbing the sleepers.
8:30 – Hot Breakfast
9:30-10:30 - Speaker Session
10:30-12:00 - Boot/Shoe boxes distributed/Free Clothing Store/Leisure & Game Time/Social Services/Health Screenings
12:00 – Entertainment
1:00 – Hot Lunch
2:00 – Movie & Free Concession Stand
5:00 - Clean up site & men walk to Monday Night PADS site @ Faith Lutheran
This will be our 6th PADS MLK Day and it is truly a beautiful, community effort. It unfolds as people plug into the lives of others. Don't be silent...add your voice to the things that matter.
