We are very excited to have Sue Sternberg out to present 2 of her talks on Nose Work!
It's a Friday afternoon/evening, which I know is challenging for a lot of people. We hope you can make it. This would be worth taking the afternoon off!
3pm - 5pm Nosework Ethogram
... or A Catalog Common Sniffing Behaviors. An “ethogram” is a collection of common, species-specific behaviors. This video presentation is a Nosework Ethogram, and takes a number of sniffing behaviors common to all dogs, all breeds, and shows them multiple times in normal and slow motion. The more minute, discrete sniffing behaviors we can incorporate into the back of our minds, the more we can concentrate when observing our own dogs search and respond to odor.
*We hosted this talk in CA and several people told me (Natalie) in the weeks after how much more they were noticing while their dog was searching!*
Despite what it says below, times are Central Time Zone!
5:30pm - 8:30pm Observations On Handler Path and Dog Path in Nosework
In the sport of agility, much of what is taught are handling systems, and, after the dog learns the obstacles, most of the remaining lifespan is all about handling. In the sport of AKC tracking, there is a taught definitive handling system. In the sport of Nosework, we are often told "to stay behind the dog", or to "follow the dog", but little detail is given about exactly how one should handle during a search, or what these directions mean specifically. Offering lessons on how the handler's path affects the dog's path from the sport of agility, plus introducing the concept of pushing or pulling a dog through a "course" or "search", I will be introducing ideas about handling for nose work. This will not be a seminar on when to use certain handling, but rather a seminar on how your path affects your dog, how to consciously know when you are taking over a search and how to consciously allow the dog to lead the search. [Anyone wishing to send Sue video clips in which handler path and dog path could be analyzed during the seminar, please feel free to email or dropbox footage to [email protected]]
Location - 1 Wolf Creek Road, Troy, MO 63379
