Mental Health Challenges & Supports in the Frederick LGBT Community

NAMI Frederick will host an educational lecture titled "Mental Health Challenges & Supports in the Frederick LGBT Community"

Topics Included:

  • Learn about the prevalence of, and costs associated with, behavioral health
  • Gain insight about stigma and its impact on people seeking behavioral health service
  • Understand the intersection of sexual orientation, gender Identity, and behavioral health
  • Learn about practical steps to address stigma

Peter Brehm (pronouns: he/him) is a former member of the board of The Frederick Center, Inc., a 501(c)3 dedicated to supporting, educating, linking, organizing, and providing outreach to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and Ally community of central Maryland. He previously served as the organization’s treasurer and, subsequent to that, vice chair.  Brehm helped formulate The Frederick Center’s LGBTQ 101 training materials and is part of the team that presents this material to numerous educational, law enforcement, civic, social work, medical, and allied organizations throughout central Maryland. As part of his work with the Frederick Center, Brehm is a member of Frederick County’s Child Fatality Review Task Force, School Health Council, and Affirming Practice Ad Hoc Group that includes Frederick Memorial Hospital and the Frederick County Health Department. Among other recent projects, he coordinated the Frederick Center’s 2018 Health Equality Index Survey of Frederick’s medical providers to begin documenting treatment gaps for LGBTQ people in Frederick. 

Clare Madrigal, has been an Emergency Room nurse for 12 years, and also serves as the LGBTQ Resource Nurse, and LGBTQ Committee Co-Chair for Sibley Memorial Hospital of Johns Hopkins Medicine. In this role, she provides LGBTQ health education for staff, community outreach, and advocacy for patients, as well as, employees. Also, an Emergency nurse at Frederick Memorial Hospital, Clare has implemented LGBTQ health education, and continues to encourage inclusive practices within the organization. As a board member for The Frederick Center, Clare will continue to provide LGBTQ education, and advocacy. Clare is also certified in Plant Based Nutrition, and a passionate animal rights advocate. Clare lives in Frederick with her wife, Cheryl, and dog, Pumpkin
