Citizenship Class @ Catholic Charities
Welcome! We are excited to offer multiple volunteer opportunities to people who want to be involved in helping refugees and immigrants prepare for their Citizenship Interviews. We strive to keep the classes fun and engaging, and we hope that you will help us continue that tradition.
All tutors will work with small groups of adult students, under the guidance of a Citizenship teacher. All lessons and materials will be prepared and provided. All classes are held at the address below and are taught in English - there are no other language requirements for volunteers.
As a tutor you will help students learn the relevant American history and civics content, while also helping them improve their English speaking, listening, reading and writing skills required for the naturalization interview.
There are THREE levels of Citizenship classes:
Level A (Not listed in this signup): Pre-Literacy level and older refugees - Focus is on building literacy skills and basic English conversation that is relevant to naturalization.
Level B: Beginning Literacy - Focus is on expanding literacy skills and learning all civics and vocabulary content, as well as improving naturalization-related interview skills.
Level C: Intermediate Literacy - Focus is on fine-tuning literacy skills and expanding knowledge and understanding of all civics and vocabulary content, as well as perfecting naturalization-related interview skills.
You can sign up for as many or as few time slots as you are available, and you can revisit this site to change your availability at any time. If you sign up for a time slot and are no longer able to come, we ask that you please update your signup or contact us ASAP so that we have time to find someone to take that slot.
If you have any questions, or are interested in volunteering but do not see a time slot that fits your schedule, please message us. We also have evening classes, but those time slots are listed in a separate signup. (Contact Ali Anderson for that link)
All volunteers are required to attend one on-boarding and volunteer training session prior to volunteering in a class. If you have attended a training hosted by the Citizenship staff in the past, you do not need to attend another one this quarter. The training dates are listed in the signupgenius time slots - if you cannot attend one of these sessions, please let Ali Anderesen know as soon as possible.
Thank you for your interest in our Citizenship Preparation Program!
