Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN)
The Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN) helps families who are seeking permanent housing by giving them shelter and three meals a day, through the hospitality of different churches and synagogues.
St. Cassian Church will be hosting the families during the week of February 17 through February 24. The parish community has worked together for many years to make this outreach a success.
During our host week, volunteers are needed to prepare meals to feed about 7-15 people. Please provide what you are planning to bring, as we want to try to avoid serving the same food if possible (i.e., serving pasta 2-3 days in a row). When planning a meal, please try to include some type of protein (beef/chicken/pork), carbohydrate (bread/rice/potatoes/noodles/pasta) and vegetable. Desserts are also welcome but not required, especially later in the week since we usually have left overs. About a week prior, I will find out the specific number of guests and any allergies.
Some popular requests or past favorites include:
- Fried Chicken
- Buffalo Wings
- Sliced Ham
- Sausage and Egg Croissant (breakfast)
While additional volunteers are scheduled to be present during each meal, cooks are also welcome share a meal with our guests and fellow volunteers. Please also note in the comments section if you are planning to stay so we know how many people to expect during that time. It is also important to be mindful that while some guests welcome conversation, other guests may be more reluctant to socialize. We want to make our guests feel as comfortable as we can and will respect their wishes. If you plan on bringing your child(ren), please provide their ages, and be available to supervise your children as well as the children they engage with.
Monday & Saturday volunteers: Please note that due to weekend and holiday schedules, there is a possibility that all families will out of the building as we try to be flexible to the circumstances of each individual. If meals are not needed during specific time frames, volunteers will be contacted about these cancelations.
Note: On Saturday, February 23, volunteers are not needed to prepare a lunch nor dinner as food will already be provided.
Thank you in advance for your help with providing a meal for our guests!
There will be a training and info session for volunteers (who will be interacting with our guests) on Wednesday, February 13 at 7pm in Larkin Hall.
