Light up the Sky, by Moss Hart, is a fast-paced, hilarious and ultimately loving look inside show business, set just before and immediately after a Broadway bound play meets its first audience. Directed by Paul R. Dixon, this valentine to Broadway has a part for everyone: 9-10 men, 4 women, various ages, parts large and small(er), see description below. This is the second play of our centennial season and was very popular when it was first performed in the second quarter of AFD's history.
Auditions will consist of readings from the script, sides available for perusal at auditions. Script available from Amazon, and a perusal copy will be put on reserve at Robbins Library (Arlington) by mid-July. Vax cards required, also bring a mask. For questions, please contact the director at [email protected].
Call backs will be August 28.
Character: Description
Carleton: Director of The Time is Now, the play within the play. Emotional. (35-55)
Owen: Playwright friend of Irene. She has been in his plays, and he is there to lend his support. (30-50)
Stella: Mother of Irene, star of The Time is Now. She’s street-smart. She calls it how she sees it. She’s a card shark. (20-25 years older than Irene)
Peter: Idealistic author of The Time is Now. He was a truck driver before someone decided to produce his play. (25-35)
Sidney: Producer of The Time is Now. A hardboiled businessman who knows nothing about theatre, but who loves this play. He’s also had amazing luck with just about everything he’s dabbled in. (35-50)
Miss Lowell: Ghost writer of Irene’s memoir. She’s there to do her job, but she doesn’t quite fit in among the others, though she will try. (25-40)
Irene: Star of The Time is Now. A celebrated, larger than life star of the stage. Imagine Margo Channing, Katherine Cornell, Tallulah Bankhead, and Lily Garland rolled into one. (30-40)
Tyler: Irene’s (current) husband. In the words of Stella, Irene married him for “comfort.” He’s very “nice.” A stockbroker, who’s a bit out of his element around “theatre people.” (30-40)
Frances: Wife of Sidney, former professional ice skater, but still has the looks and figure to return to the ice and headline. As graceful a skater might be, Frances’ demeanor might not be so polished. However, she’s very smart and fast on her feet. Still in good enough shape to return to the ice if she wants to. (30-40)
Sven*: Resident masseur at the Ritz-Carlton, fit and handsome. (25-40)
Max*: Shriner, in town for the convention. Midwestern, often drunk. (25-60)
Ed (1st MAN in script)*: Shriner, in town for the convention. Midwestern, often drunk. (25-60)

William (SHRINER in script)*: Shriner from Indiana. A successful businessman who really wanted to go into the theatre. A potential Broadway producer. (30-50)
Cop*: Plainclothes detective. Brusque, matter-of-fact. (25-60).
