Setting: 1937, the woods of Baraboo, Wisconsin, the area is part of “Sand County.” “Sand County” refers to a collection of counties in central Wisconsin that have deep, sandy soil, as a result of the glacial history of the region.
Cast of Characters: *All KWT characters are portrayed by adult actors regardless of character’s age.
Estella Leopold – the youngest of Aldo’s five children, born in 1927, 10-years old at the time of the play, very close to her father. Brave, loud, and maybe a little reckless.
Nina Leopold – the third eldest of Aldo’s five children, born in 1917, 20-years old at the time of the play, sensible and grounded, tries to keep her younger siblings under control.
Carl Leopold – the fourth eldest of Aldo’s five children, born in 1919, 18-years old at the time of the play, an aspiring photographer. He is a bit superstitious and regularly pokes fun at his younger sister. Actor also portrays the Great Horned Owl.
Aldo Leopold – born in 1887, 50-years old at the time of the play, father to Estella, Nina, and Carl; considered by many to be the father of wildlife ecology and the US’ wilderness system. He was a conservationist, forester, philosopher, educator, writer, and outdoor enthusiast. Among his best-known ideas is the “land ethic” which calls for an ethical, caring relationship between people and nature. Actor also portrays the Ghost, Woody, and 65290.
Additional characters played by one of the above four parts:
Great Horned Owl – a puppet controlled by the same actor portraying Carl. A large hungry owl that lives near the Leopold home, not the brightest.
Ghost of Sand County – the forest spirit of John Muir, sends the three Leopold children on a quest through the woods in search of their missing father. The ghost is played by the same actor portraying Aldo Leopold.
Woody the Woodcock – a puppet controlled by the same actor portraying Aldo Leopold. Woody is an over-the-top male woodcock who is preparing for the Sky Dance to attract a mate.
65290 the Chickadee – a puppet controlled by the same actor portraying Aldo Leopold. 65290 is a tough talking little chickadee who teaches Estella that “size doesn’t matter when it comes to standing tall.” Date:
