Plant Responses to Climate Change with Ecologist Dr. Nathalie Chardon

Join the Conservancy in the field with ecologist Dr. Nathalie Chardon to explore how plant communities are responding to climate change. An ecologist at the University of British Columbia, Dr. Chardon is part of a multi-year study of plant communities in the Methow Valley. Many plant species seek refuge by moving north or to higher elevations. Many, however, are not moving, leaving them at risk as their environment warms. Why are these plants staying put?

Sign up below.  Content for both days will be similar, but location and physical difficulty will be different as outlined:

Day one - Maple Pass:  We will hike about 5 miles in total, with approximately 2,000 feet of elevation gain, visiting 5 sites along the Maple Pass Trail.  Individual research sites are located off-trail in steep and uneven terrain.  Trekking poles are recommended, and the group will maintain a consistent, efficient pace.  Participants should budget from 8am to 6pm for this field day, and be able to hike 2,000 elevational feet in 3 hours.

Day two - Mazama Forest Service Rd 52: We will drive approximately 7 mi (~30 min) along FS Rd 52, stopping at 5 sites along the way.  Individual sites are no more than ½ mile from the road, but will require walking off-trail on uneven, forested terrain. Participants should budget from 11am to 6pm for this field day.

If you have any questions about the pace or physical demands for either day, please email [email protected] or call Bridger at 509.996.5873.
