Hickory Point Environmental Committee
As a part of Earth Day and environmental awareness educational programming, Hickory Point will participate in food scrap collection for composting, from April 11th - April 29th! The Environmental Committee is looking for parent volunteers to help with the lunchtime collection.
At clean-up time, school staff will announce and remind students about compost collection. At this time, we will need each parent volunteer to be responsible for 1 compost bin (there will be 3-4 bins total). Parent volunteers will push their compost bin down aisles of tables. Kids are to throw ONLY THEIR FOOD SCRAPS into the bins (see below for specific notes on this).
Student garbage helpers will follow directly behind the parent/compost bin, and kids will throw all trash into the garbage bins.
What goes in compost bins / what doesn’t?
IN COMPOST BINS: ALL FOOD SCRAPS - crumbs, crusts, veggies, fruit ends, pretzels, sandwich bits, etc. Any food item.
NOT FOR COMPOSTING (following items are for garbage cans): NO WRAPPERS, BAGGIES, ETC. and NO MILK. So, for example, if they have potato chip bits, they have to shake those out of their bag and into compost bin, but then the baggie goes into the garbage bin.
**Parents should make sure kids are not composting foods just to compost. If they try to toss in a whole sandwich, full container of fruit, obviously uneaten items, parents should encourage kids to either eat their lunch, or take home for a snack later.
THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR HELP AND SUPPORT!
