PLEASE READ CAREFULLY
If you have applied to PS 58's Dual Language Kindergarten Program for your French-speaking or French-English bilingual child born 2014, please make an appointment for your child's mandatory French fluency assessment now. Twins? Make two appointments.
(If your child speaks English only, or very little French, he/she does not need an assessment. Please do not make an appointment.)
Our Dual Language program strives to enroll an equal number of Francophone (French-language dominant) and Anglophone (English-language dominant) students. Each language group becomes an important support and example to the other students as they all learn a second language.
The assessment takes about 20 minutes, and is essentially a conversation in French between one of our teachers and your child. Parents wait in a separate room during the assessment.
Students who speak French but little or no English are likely to be eligible for English Language Learner status and would have priority for DLP seat offers.
If, after the assessment, we cannot verify that your child speaks French, he/she will still be considered for a DLP seat offer as an Anglophone.
In any given year, we may have a wait list of zoned Francophones, and we always have a wait list of zoned Anglophones. The Office of Enrollment will determine your order on any wait list.
We do not share the results of our assessment with families. The data is submitted directly to the Department of Education's Office of Enrollment.
Priorities for admission include:
Zoned Siblings of current students and zoned English Language Learners.
