St. Michael's Showing God's Loving Kindness
SIGN UP HERE! From July 14 through July 28, St Michael's Episcopal Church will host up to five guest families at our church. This church-based Emergency Shelter is part of efforts by Family Promise of Wake County to assist families as they transition from homelessness to safe, affordable, permanent, sustainable housing.
Below are outlines of the volunteer slots available, with more detailed guidance documents further down.

Coordinators: (these roles are filled)
Meal coordinator (Mary Bell, week 1 and Sissy Garrison, week 2 ~ assisted by Sarah Turinsky) – Purchase and replenish foods for breakfast and lunch, clean out excess food as needed, coordinate evening meal leaders
Activity coordinator (Ryland Herring) – Coordinate kid/family activity leaders across the 2 weeks to insure a variety of evening activities
Driver coordinator (Mary Reca Todd) – Coordinate drivers for 2 weeks. Make sure van stays fueled. Coordinate transportation or van issues with Family Promise staff.
Setup / Teardown Coordinator (Matt Terribile) – Organize supplies for room setup (linens, clocks, toys, towels, signs, gift baskets, etc.). Lead room setup on July 14 and break down on July 28. Coordinate laundry volunteers.
Lead Support (Nina Yeager, Ralph Yeager and Stephanie Widen) - support coordinators in areas needed.
Volunteers for each day:
Overnight Hosts (1 man and 1 woman each night) – Stay at church overnight (approximately 7:30 PM to 7 AM on weekdays and 8 AM on weekends). Answer guest questions. Set out breakfast in morning. Individual rooms and cots provided. Evening hosts are welcome to arrive early and have dinner with our guests.
Evening Meal Leader (1 each evening) – Coordinate purchasing, preparing, and serving supper and cleaning up afterward. Meal is served at 6:30 PM each evening. Enjoy dinner with our guests.
Meal Team (3 each evening) – Assist the meal leader in purchasing, preparing, and serving supper and cleaning up afterward. Meal is served at 6:30 PM each evening. Enjoy dinner with our guests.
Evening Host (1 each evening) – Serve as focal point at the Church from 5 PM to 8 PM. Make sure activity leader and both overnight hosts have arrived. Enjoy dinner with our guests.
Activity Leader (1 each evening) – Lead fun activities for children and families after dinner (approximately 7 to 8:30 PM). Excellent opportunity for St. Michael's children to help. Consider coming early to enjoy dinner with our guests.
Van Driver (2 times per day) – Drive families between church and the Family Promise Day Center in the morning (leave church at 6:45 AM) and / or evening (pick up at Day Center at 5:30 PM) using Family Promise van. Van is kept at St. Michael's during the day and overnight. Evening drivers, stay for dinner if you would like.
Volunteers for set-up, and take down:
Set up (8 or more on first day) – Set up rooms after 11:30 AM on Sunday 7/14.
Break down (8 or more on last day) – Breakdown and clean up rooms on Sunday 7/28 between 8 and 9:30 AM.
Laundry (as needed and 5 on last day) – Wash and fold linens at the end of the stay to prepare them for storage. Also wash sheets and towels as needed during the stay.
Gift Baskets (at least 3 before first day) - prepare gift baskets for each family, including any new families that arrive during the stay.
