Join us for a members only walking tour of the proposed Shockoe Hill Burying Ground Historic District in Jackson Ward, featuring Shockoe Hill Cemetery, Hebrew Cemetery, and the Shockoe Hill African Burying Ground. Guides include Ryan Smith, PhD, professor of history at VCU; William Obrochta, Director of Beth Ahabah’s Museum and Archives; Ellen Chapman, PhD, Archaeologist; and a special “appearance” by Lenora McQueen, whose advocacy and hard work is behind the recent and long overdue recognition of the Shockoe Hill African Burying Ground.
Street parking is available on 4th street. We will meet inside Shockoe Hill Cemetery, (look for balloons on hospital street) across the street from the Alms House Apartments.
We will have one start time (6:15p.m.) with limited capacity – we will require everyone to sign up in advance, social distance, wear masks if you are comfortable. You will need to agree to Historic Richmond’s COVID-19 waiver to participate. YOU MUST PRE-REGISTER TO ATTEND.
If you feel unwell please do not attend this event. Thank you!
