This is a come-and-go interactive event for children and families as they experience what the village of Bethlehem might have been like on the night of Christ's birth. Sign up here to volunteer to help make this event happen.

Bake Shop

You'll play the role of a baker in Bethlehem, explaining the role of bread in the lives of people of the time, and selling bread to the visitors of your shop. You will help children spread honey and cinnamon on their 'ancient bread'.

Basket Weaving

You'll play the role of a basket maker in the marketplace, explaining the importance of the trade to visitors, and showing them how to weave baskets. The baskets are pre-started for easy management.

You'll explain the art of blacksmithing to people. We'll give you the script and background, you'll need to be able to tend to the fire and bang on an anvil.

Carpenter Shop

You'll play the role of a carpenter in Bethlehem, showing visitors the kinds of tools you use in your shop and helping visitors try out these various tools themselves. This booth will be outside or in the foyer.

Granary Shop

As a worker at a grain mill, you will welcome visitors to come in and try your grain mill. You'll show what it was like to make flour in ancient Bethlehem, and explain the importance of flour and grains to the people of the time.

Synagogue

Teaching' in the synagogue in the marketplace. One person will be the rabbi and the other will be the rabbi's assistant. Children will be able to write Emmanuel or Jesus using ancient writing implements.

Angel

An angel of the Lord was one of the first to proclaim the good news of Jesus' birth. You'll appear to the shepherds just outside Bethlehem, letting them know that a savior has been born.

Census Taker

As a census taker, you'll help register every family that comes through the gates, welcoming them and setting the stage for what they can expect as they interact with Walk Through Bethlehem. Each family will receive a pouch of coins and a shopping bag.

Centurions

You'll portray the Holy Family in a nativity scene. Jesus should ideally be around 6 months old, though you'll know your child well enough to know if they're up for it. These shifts are shorter to accommodate the temperamental nature of infants.

Shepherds

In that region there were shepherds living in the fields keeping watch over their flock by night. In Bethlehem, you'll have an encounter with an angel, then wander about Bethlehem, searching for baby Jesus.

Tax Collector

As the Tax Collector, you'll walk around Bethlehem collecting taxes from shopkeepers and generally looking ornery. You should be able to tread the fine line between being a bit gruff without being scary. Collected 'Taxes' will be recycled at the Census.

Wise Men

The Wise Men were traveling from the East, and they brought gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh to the baby Jesus. In this role, you'll walk around the marketplace looking for Jesus, interacting with shopkeepers and guests along the way.

Costume Room Assistant

You'll be responsible for assisting actors into and out of costumes, making sure the actors have the resources they need, and keeping the costume area neatly organized. It's behind the scenes work, but it's critical in making everything run smoothly!

Cleanup

Running an event like this takes a lot of work getting everything cleaned up. You'll help get the Family Life Center ready for worship on Sunday. Many items need to be returned to the correct places. Folks will be there to direct where things need to go.
