2019 Georgia ESO Event Support

Hello everyone,

It's that time of year again :-). We need volunteers for our upcoming 2019 Georgia Elementary Science Olympiad.  We will provide any necessary materials for events upon request.  Volunteers are needed to help run and score events, and to help with set up, opening ceremonies, lunch, and clean up.

Backyard Biologists (2)

Teams will be assessed on their knowledge of living organisms that they may encounter in their own backyard.

Barge Building (2)

Each team will construct a barge of aluminum foil that can support cargo.

Bridge Building (4)

Each team will test their ability to build a strong, stable, and reproducible bridge from common materials.

 

Clean Up (2)

 

Crime Busters (2)

Teams will identify the perpetrators of a crime or crimes by using paper chromatography and analysis of unknown solids, liquids, and plastics found at the scene of a crime.

I can bring 8th grade MS Olympians to help me run this event.

Data Crunchers (2)

Teams will demonstrate their understanding of metric measurement by estimating and measuring length (meter), mass (gram), fluid volume (liter), angles, and temperature (Celsius).

 

Deep Blue Sea (2)

Each team will work cooperatively to answer questions and identify ocean flora, and fauna, physical features and phenomena related to marine science.

Teams will be challenged to apply the same scientific practices and methods, critical thinking, and reasoning skills used by CDC disease detectives.

Grab a Gram (2)

Teams cooperate to pick up given materials in an amount not to exceed fifty grams. There will be at least two rounds of competition using different substances in each round.

Mystery Architecture (2)

The objective is to develop the skills of collecting and organizing information using pictographs, bar, line and pie graphs to solve problems.

No Bones About It (3)

A team of two (2) students will match each of 10-15 different kinds of bones with an appropriate skeleton or chart of various animals.

Opening Ceremonies (2)

 

Paper Rockets (2)

Students build and fly a paper rocket from materials that are provided.

 

Rock Hound

Contestants will be required to identify various rocks and minerals. ** Volunteers already assigned for this event.

 

Starry Starry Night (2)

A team of two (2) students will identify constellations, planets, and other common celestial bodies in our universe.

Straw Egg Drop (2)

Teams of students build a device from soda straws to cradle an egg being dropped from a certain height.

The 24 Game (2)

Participants use problem solving skills combined with their knowledge of mathematics (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) to make the number 24 using the 4 numbers provided on the game cards.

Weather or Not (2)

This competition will test the students’ knowledge of meteorological terms, techniques, and events.
