Below you will find job descriptions and responsibilities please read through before signing up. There will always be a Christ the King Volunteer Manager to greet you and show you the ropes at the beginning of each shift so no need to fear if you are new! To assure a smooth 2 weeks this year we are asking all Winter Nights Volunteers whether seasoned or new to attend a Volunteer training on Monday, April 15 at 7:00pm in the Parish Hall. The training will take approx. an hour. All volunteers who can not attend training should touch base with Father Mario at [email protected] or call the parish office and ask for him at 925-682-2486
Kitchen Intake and Organizing: You will be in charge waiting in the Kitching as food arrives on our intake dates: Saturday, April 20th; Friday, April 26th; Sunday, April 28th; Friday, May 3rd. The initial intake involves organizing the kitchen and creating "sections" for the food and organizing the refridgerators.
Set up/Clean Up: Set up will occur on Monday Morning, April 22nd from 10:00am-1:00pm. We need volunteers to help us transform our gym into a warm and welcoming shelter. Heavy lifting like carrying boxes, decorations, and rugs, along with table set up is required. We will need help again on Monday April 24th from 10 a.m.-1p.m. to break down the shelter and store things for next year.
Weekday Breakfast Servers/Clean-up: Should be at the kitchen in the parish hall at 5:30 a.m. weekdays. Responsibilities include, serving breakfast, making, cleaning up food after breakfast and doing an over-all tidying up of the facility after clients have left for the day, should be done by 7:30a.m.
Weekend Breakfast Servers/Clean-up: Should plan to arrive at the Parish Hall Kitchen at 7 a.m. Breakfast food will be available in our pantry. Volunteers will help cook and serve hot breakfast for clients from 8 am- 10 am. After breakfast you will clean up and should be done no later than 10:30 a.m.
Tutors: Tutors should arrive at 5:15 p.m. to the gym, when arriving, a traveling tutor who has been working with students through the entirety of Winter Nights will introduce you and get you started. You are invited to stay and have dinner at Winter Nights or head out at 7:15 p.m. when homework is done.
Weekend Helper: Weekends are a bit hard to predict at Winter Nights many clients leave for the weekend, some go off to catch a movie or visit a friend. However, whether 1 person or all 25 are on-site someone from CTK must always be a present. So mainly this job is about being available for whatever comes up on the weekends. There are 3 shifts you can work including 10 a.m.- 12 noon, 12 noon -2 p.m. or 2 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. On this shift you will check in with the weekend manager to find out who is in and who is out, you may be asked to do some simple tidying up. During the 12- 2 pm shift you also will set out, serve and clean up lunch (Sandwiches). The final shift is a little longer and will end as soon as the group arriving to set up dinner arrives. This job is for persons 18 years and older unless accompanied by parent.
Overnight Help: These are volunteers who spend the night to act as a CTK's on-site representatives, please only sign up for this shift if you are over 18 or accompanied by a parent. The main responsibility is to be an on-site back-up in case of an emergency. These volunteers arrive at 8 p.m. and stay on air mattresses in the parish hall until 5:30 a.m. when the breakfast servers arrive. Laundry Duty: This important job can be done at home. You will pick up a load of laundry anytime between 5-7:30 p.m. on the evening you volunteer and return it back the following day in the same hours. The laundry we wash is simply towels and sheets.

Please note that all volunteers who help with activities and services at the winter nights shelter are mandated by the diocese of Oakland to be trained by the Virtus Program. Everyone who completed it last year is covered, if you have never been trained you will need to go online and complete the 1 hour training at virtusonline.org.
