Seeking these roles ONLY:
Small Allison, John, Christian, Joan, Male (Pete, Roy, Mark, Bobby Jeremy)
CAST: Adult Allison, Medium Allison, Bruce, Helen
Small Allison – Female, age 8-12. Alto/Belt. Alison Bechdel at age 8. Small Alison is exceedingly precocious, self-aware, and confident. She has a bossy streak, and occasionally has the boldness to take a stand against her father when he pushes unwanted femininity-- like a dress or hair barrette-- on her. Small Alison is inquisitive (almost to a fault) and deeply honest. She loves her parents, but senses that something is amiss (though that doesn’t stop her from pressing them for details). Small Alison has a major discovery about her identity after seeing a butch delivery woman in a luncheonette with her father. This realization is profound and deeply felt. This role requires a young actor with phenomenal skill and a preternatural earnestness that can’t be faked.
Christian – Male, age 11-13. The older sibling to Alison and Christian. Christian is eager to be the leader, but often finds himself dominated by bold Alison and adorable John. Nevertheless, Christian is a curious, funny, and loving young man. He’s smart, and walks to the beat of his own drum.
John – Male, age 6-10. Treble/Boy Soprano. Alison and Christian’s younger brother, John is eager to please, funny, and imaginative. John can be bossy, but on him it reads as precociousness. He is the “lead singer” in the kids’ “commercial” for the funeral home, and he brings down the house.
Joan – Female, age 18-20. Alto. Confident, quirky, and sexy, Joan is a self-identified lesbian. Joan is generous with her self-knowledge and strength, and helps Alison come into her own as a woman and as a lesbian. She is genial, kind, and supremely comfortable even in the supremely uncomfortable moments she experiences with Alison.
Male (Pete, Roy, Mark, Bobby Jeremy) – Male, (Should be able to play age 17-25).
Pete – a Mourner
Roy – a young man Bruce hires to do yard work
Mark – a high school junior
Bobby Jeremy – an imaginary 1970’s television character
(Actor will play all four roles)
