Glean Team Pick Up November and December 2022
Thank you so much for your interest in the Glean Team! We appreciate your joining us to help our neighbors struggling with food scarcity and to reduce usable food in the waste stream. Below is an introduction to what is involved and the mechanism to reserve your shifts as a transporter of the donated food.
Expect that each shift will be between 60 and 90 minutes. For delivery to Loaves and Fishes on Wednesdays and Fridays, you should pick up at Roche Bros by 9:30 AM. Pick up at Shaw’s can be as early as 8:30 AM, and on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, pick up at Roche Bros should be between 9:30 and 10:30 AM. Once your car is loaded, deliver directly to the destination listed for that day. It is important to maintain “food safety” by limiting to under one hour the time refrigerated foods are unrefrigerated between pickup and delivery.

Instructions for Stow Shaw’s Pick Up on Wednesdays:
We've recently changed our collection of frozen meat from Shaw's from Mondays to Wednesdays to accommodate our recipient pantries' schedules. Volunteers pick up frozen meat from Shaw's in Stow Center and deliver it, on alternating weeks, to WHEAT Community Connections or Loaves & Fishes. The Shaw’s is at 155 Great Rd, Stow, MA (Route 117) on the north side of 117. The SignUp sheet specifies where to make the delivery each Wednesday.
After 7:30 AM on the morning of your shift, call Tim the meat manager to let him know to expect you. His number is 978-897-5140 ext 7. When you arrive at Shaw’s, drive around to the back of the store to a single unmarked gray door with a small ramp (about 1 foot high). Walk straight into the warehouse and the cool room with the meat (in boxes on a cart) is about 50 feet ahead and to the right. If the cart is not there, ask one of the meat people and they will get it for you. Move the cart to the door and load the boxes onto your vehicle. If the boxes are stacked high, do not roll the cart down the outdoor ramp; carry the boxes one by one from inside. The heaviest boxes are about 40 lbs. (feel free to move product from a heavier to lighter box or bring empty boxes with you). There will typically be fewer than 10 boxes.
Instructions for Roche Bros. Pick Up Tuesdays through Saturdays:
Roche Bros Acton is located at 387 Mass Ave in Acton Plaza. Drive around the back to the 2nd loading dock (there are stairs leading up to it and a rolling ramp for boxes). If the loading dock door is closed, knock/bang on the door and it will be opened. If not, call the store at 978-263-0404 and ask them to open the overhead door. Once inside, go to the room to the right and a cart with produce should already be there. Ask an employee if the cart is meant for the food pantry. It is usually ready by 9:30 AM. Prepared foods are stored in a shopping cart in the walk-in cool room to the left. You will have to box prepared foods in banana boxes (ask an employee where to find them or bring your own). If you have any concern about which are the prepared foods for the pantry donation, ask before boxing. Before taking dairy (if there is any in the walk-in), make sure the expiration date is that day or later; leave behind all dairy items that have passed their “sell by” dates. You should also take bread and other baked items, which are in brown boxes stacked on a shopping cart located either outside or inside the loading dock door.

Tuesday and Thursday (and alternating Wednesday) Deliveries: WHEAT Community Connections, 272 High Street Extension, Clinton, MA – Pantry Director Jodi Breidel (968-660-6386) is in her office or an administrator is at the reception desk (978-370-4943) The pantry is at the rear of a small strip mall perpendicular to High Street. Look for a blue sign on High Street for Sims Cleaners. Go inside the pantry door and tell a volunteer you need helpers with wagons to unload the delivery from your vehicle.
Wednesday and Friday Deliveries: Loaves & Fishes, 234 Barnum Road, Devens, MA - Go down the driveway/parking lot and back up to the loading dock. There will typically be or two or three volunteers to help you unload your vehicle. If the door is locked or no one responds to the bell, contact Food Coordinator Tara Hanley (978-772-4627) or Director Patti Stern (978-425-9153). You will be asked to sign a form indicating the source of and time spent doing pickup and delivery.
Saturday Deliveries: Transitions at Devens, 18 Cavite Street, Devens, MA - Ring the bell at the front door and someone will come out with a flatbed to help you unload your vehicle. If no one responds, call 978-772-2891.
During May through October on (approximately) one Saturday a month, the Glean Team delivers the Roche pickup to FreeBee Market (Boxborough Congregational Church, 823 Massachusetts Ave., Boxborough, MA) instead of Transitions. Those Saturdays will be indicated on the SignUp sheet. Plan to arrive at the outdoor FreeBee by 9:30, where there will be volunteers ready to receive the food.
The Glean Team loves new volunteers! Please spread the word among your friends. No better recruiters than those who are already volunteers. And we love showing new volunteers the ropes. If this is your first gleaning shift, please contact one of the Glean Team chairs to arrange to shadow one of us before gleaning on your own.
