First Light Shelter for Homeless Women and Children, like the rest of us, has had to pivot to meet changing needs during the COVID-19 pandemic. Many volunteers have provided lunch to the guests every day since the pandemic lockdown began in March, and many of you were a part of that force for good! First Light is pivoting yet again as of September 2020. Pathways, the day shelter down the street, is going to begin providing lunches to First Light guests by sending lunches down the street to First Light Monday through Friday each week. Therefore, we are enlisting volunteers to help provide lunch for First Light guests on the weekends on selected dates--these can be lunches you make at home and deliver to First Light or you can order from a restaurant and have the lunches delivered. These can be lunches of your choice: sack lunches with sandwiches, chips, fruit and dessert; pizza; barbecue sandwiches; Chick-fil-A; boxed lunches from a local restaurant. Current numbers of guests are approximately 20 people. Lunches need to be delivered on the day assigned by 11:00 AM and taken/delivered directly to First Light at 2230 4th Avenue North 35203. There are two slots each day and each person is responsbile for providing 10 lunches. Those signing up on a given day can coordinate the lunch together so everyone is preparing the same lunch or ordering from the same place. Those who sign up to provide lunch can either come to serve lunch themselves, or just deliver the lunch to be served by staff members. Thank you for helping our homeless neighbors during these difficult times! Another expressed need at First Light is powdered drink mixes: Kool-Aid, Lemonade, powdered Ice Tea mix. If you have a chance when you purchase lunch supplies, it would be so helpful if you could purchase some powdered drink mix and take those with you when you drop off your lunches! Thank you! If you have any trouble getting your lunches to First Light, please feel free to contact Susan Clayton at [email protected] or 205-908-6547 and she will assist you!
