We serve an evening meal to approximately 40 to 50 guests in the hall attached to the Beverly First Baptist Church on Cabot St. on the first Monday of each month. Our guests may be homeless or close to it. Some are regulars, while some are not, but they all deserve a nutritious, home cooked meal. All meal ideas are welcome, but we like to give them a balance of protein, carbs, vegetables or fruit, and a dessert. While there is a full commercial kitchen that we serve from, most people do the majority of the prep work at home to ensure the meal is served on time.
The meal is served promptly at 6:00 pm. This is very important to our guests, as they look forward to this meal, so please plan accordingly. Even if you have done much of the prep work at home, you should arrive at 5:00 pm to set up the tables and get the serving plates ready to be served at by 6:00 pm. You should plan on serving and clean up to take +/- 1 hour, so it is roughly a 2 hour stay once you are there.
What do you need to bring?
Paper plates, napkins, plastic utensils.
Beverages—milk, water, coffee. One gallon of milk is enough, plus cream for coffee. Coffee must be made during prep time. Pitchers of water are set out with the rest of the beverages.
The meal—this is up to you. Please keep in mind, our guests appreciate something warm, satisfying, and nutritious—but just as important—on time! When in doubt, go for something simple to make sure things go smoothly—both for them, and for you. The less stress you experience, the more you can enjoy serving these folks.
Bread and dessert. A great source for this is Panera in the North Beverly Plaza (tel. 978-998-6860). Panera donates their leftover baked goods to anyone who is willing to take them at the end of the day. If you are interested, you need to arrange for pickup on Sunday. Please call the manager during the day and arrange to pick up at closing time on Sunday. Just tell them that you are part of the church group that serves meals at the First Baptist Church. Sometimes the person you speak with doesn’t get it or care about what you are trying to do, so be persistent , and make sure someone will be there on Sunday night to allow you to pick up the leftover backed goods. The quantities are more than enough, and the food is delicious!
Tables should already be set up. Set napkins and utensils out at each seat, along with salt and pepper (in kitchen) and butter (set out a ½ stick on a plate for each table).
Brew coffee, do remaining meal prep.
Set beverages out on buffet.
Start staging meals. Meals should be served (not buffet), so you should build up a supply of meals to start the serving process promptly at 6:00pm. Serving trays are available in the kitchen. Be ready to offer second portions once everyone has had a chance to eat. Some may want a take home plate as well.
Serve dessert out on a buffet table.
Clean up tables, put away tables and chairs, clean kitchen, trays, utensils. All done!
