My Other Life
Posted by: Dan Rutledge on 6/8/11 02:48 PM EST
As you may or may not know, in addition to to my work at SignUpGenius, I still occasionally do some work as a film/video director. I usually am involved in a couple big projects each year. I just got notified that two of my projects from last year were awarded a Bronze Telly from The Telly Awards!
The first project was a corporate video for a technology outsourcing company called TITAN. The interesting thing about this video is that I had to find a way to create a global-themed video without the budget to shoot international footage. I ended up writing a script that allowed me to build 90% of the video from stock footage and graphics I created. For a business video, it turned out pretty well. If you are interested in business technology... or if you are having trouble getting to sleep some night, you can check out the finished product here.
The second Telly was for some videos I produced for a Christian youth sports ministry called Upward. This organization helps churches organize their own sports league under the Upward banner. There are half a million kids that are involved in Upward Basketball, Soccer, Football, or cheerleading each year at churches all over the nation. I had the privilege of writing and directing 30 videos that were used to reinforce the Bible memory verses that the kids learn each week at practice. It was a very fun concept where the kid actors travelled around the world to a new location each week to review the verse. We used a green-screen to transport the kids into exotic locations. Here are two sample videos for Football and Soccer. And one fun-fact... my daughter is the kid host for soccer. She's a hoot!
Film/Video has always been a passion of mine, so it's a blast for me to be able to do some projects each year. Don't tell anyone... but we've even been developing some exciting videos for SignUpGenius. Shhhh. It's top secret and I can't tell you about them or I'd have to kill you. But maybe you'll see them this fall...
10 Tips for Getting a Media Internship
Posted by: Dan Rutledge on 4/14/11 12:00 PM EST
Because I work in the media industry, I tend to get a lot of interest from young people related to internships. This is especially true because our company is involved in film/video production, and many young people seem to believe that this is an incredibly cool and lucrative career that is pursued by good-looking and crazy-fun people. This is, apparently, before they meet me.
In the last several years I have had the chance to interact with a number of young people who are seeking advice or work. I’ve met a few that really impressed me and quite a few that left a lot to be desired in their professionalism. If you’re a young person considering a media internship somewhere or if you have got a son or daughter that is considering applying to a company, here are some points to remember.
I recognize that a few of these tips may sound harsh, but my intent was to provide helpful advice that will help you stand out from the pack. And honestly, you will never fully outgrow this kind of workplace behavior. No matter how far you advance, there is always someone that is your boss and needs to be treated properly. I still practice most of these items daily - with clients now - working hard to show proper respect and convey professionalism in every interaction with them.
I wish you the best in your pursuit of an internship and a long-term media career!
What I've Been Up To This Month (Besides SignUpGenius)
Posted by: Dan Rutledge on 4/16/10 04:49 PM EST
We keep pretty busy at Skylark, the company that runs SignUpGenius. In addition to the support and development of this website... we are also involved in film and video production. To some people that may seem like a rather broad focus for a company. But really -- since the internet and video media are getting closer to merging every day, it's actually pretty natural. If it involves creativity, visual or technical expertise, and ends up getting published in some type of media... that's in our wheelhouse.
This month we've been working on a great project for Upward Unlimited, a national Christian sports league for kids. We're writing and directing a set of videos for use on their website (I told you things were merging) that will be viewed by about 500,000 kids in their leagues. It's a very fun project and I thought I'd show some images from our recent shoot. We're using a green screen and some fun special effects in post.
So if you child plays in an Upward League, be sure to look for some of our videos on the Upward website this next year. And of course... be sure to organize your team snacks, parties, and league volunteers using SignUpGenius! I keep trying to figure out how I can include our logo somewhere in the video... but so far no luck!
Oh... and if you don't know me... I'm the handsome guy in the black shirt.
