Greater West Hollywood Food Coalition
The Greater West Hollywood Food Coalition relies on energetic people like you who are interested in volunteering in Los Angeles. We need volunteers primarily to help prepare the our six course nightly meal (from 2:30-6:30 pm), to serve our nightly buffet meal (from 5:45-8:30pm), and to pick up donated food (one to two hours, at variable times).
Please note that we have moved our kitchen to 5939 Hollywood Blvd in The Way In Center on the Salvation Army Hollywood Campus (between Gower and Bronson).
Our nightly meal preparation is "creative cooking" -- We see what has been donated that day and from these ingredients we create our meal -- no recipes included.
During your meal preparation shift, you can choose from a variety of kitchen jobs to create a meal which will be served that evening. These jobs may include cooking soup and casseroles, cutting fruits and vegetables for salads, assembling bread bins and dessert trays, making sandwiches, preparing any other donated foods we will serve that evening, and cleaning. We encourage you to choose jobs based on your strengths in order to make it the best experience possible. Kitchen leads will be there to guide and support you throughout the shift.
Please wear comfortable clothing and shoes that you don't mind getting dirty and bring a water bottle or beverage of your choice. Some people bring their own knives or apron but that's entirely up to you. We will have everything you might need in the kitchen.
Monday through Friday, we serve our nightly meal indoors in the cozy dining room at The Way In Center on the Salvation Army Hollywood Campus. Your shift will begin here with helping to set up the dining room.
Volunteering for our daily meal service M-F will include helping to set up the dining room, serving a freshly prepared meal, washing the items we have used to serve the dinner, breaking down one of the dining rooms (10-15 minutes) and a final cleaning of the dining room and the kitchen. At the end of the day, cleaning the kitchen is just as important as serving the meal. A thorough cleaning upholds our high hygienic standards and ensures safety for all.
On Saturdays and Sundays, we will still be serving, for the time being, at Sycamore and Romaine. Your volunteer shift will begin by meeting our truck at our street location, helping unload/load the truck, setting up our serving tables, serving the meal and sweeping/making sure the street is clean. It is important that we don't leave any trash behind. We require a 3 or 4 of our volunteers to return to our kitchen location to help clean the items we have used to serve.
When we serve and clean, we chat and visit with those who come to us and get to know them little by little through caring and friendly volunteers like you. When they know us, they feel comfortable asking for help moving forward and we do that to the best of our abilities. This is a unique opportunity to serve a beautiful and nutritious meal to our clients and community members.
When you sign up for a day that has open slots, your sign up is the confirmation of your volunteer day and shift. Simply arrive at 5939 Hollywood Boulevard at the designated time for your shift and the Kitchen or Meal Service Lead will give you a small orientation and instructions for your shift. We try to make it really easy to volunteer with us, so we don't have an orientation day like many other organizations. You will receive an automated reminder email 2 days before your volunteer date.
We look forward to having you join us!
